Mohammed Salisu’s Return To The Black Stars Is A Disaster Waiting To Happen

The confirmation of Ghana and Southampton defender, Mohammed Salisu’s return to the Black Stars ordinarily should be wonderful news because the many attempts by Ghana football officials to get the highly-rated defender to play for the Black Stars has finally borne fruit.

Mohammed Salisu

But, will it all end well for both Salisu and the Black Stars or there is trouble ahead?

First of, let’s begin with some background.

Mohammed Salisu has consistently refused to play for the Black Stars over the past couple of years for reasons he has failed to reveal to the public. The most prominent amongst many rumors suggest that he was badly treated by Ghana Football Association Officials in times past and so, decided to never play for Ghana again.

This decision of Salisu to turn down Black Stars call-ups whiles also refusing to make public his reasons for doing so caused many Ghana football fans to become upset with the defender and declare that he was no longer needed since he clearly wasn’t committed or interested in playing for the senior National team.

According to these fans, enough time and energy had been spent on trying to get Salisu to change his mind and it was time to forget about him and focus on the many other capable defenders Ghana has.

After all, according to them, there was nothing extraordinary about Salisu with Alexander Djiku and Leicester City’s Daniel Amartey excelling in the World Cup qualifiers.

So now, with Salisu changing his mind and agreeing to return with a few months to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, what happens to all the bad blood that was caused by his past rejection of call-ups and worsened by his decision to keep silent on the reasons behind it?

Mohammed Salisu

What happens when Salisu gets to start ahead of any of the two Center backs to qualified us to the World Cup?

And more crucially, what if he is unfortunate to cause any error that affects Ghana’s chances at the World Cup?

With all the bad energy that was caused by Salisu’s rejection of call-ups and his silence on the reasons, will it not be better for him to now come out and explain why he was refusing call-ups in the past?

Doing this will go a long way to clearing all the bad blood and ensuring that all Ghana football fans will support him wholeheartedly and wish him well rather than possibly hoping he slips up so they can attack him.

So this is to Mohammed Salisu and all those close to him and also to GFA Officials, please get Salisu to reveal to Ghanaians the real reasons why he rejected invitations to the Black Stars on many occasions and also why he has now agreed to play for the team.

We do not want to believe it is because of the upcoming World Cup although a player of Salisu’s quality and pedigree is a major boost to Ghana’s chances at the tournament.
