Spanish-born Ghanaian football star, Inaki William’s decision to finally switch to playing for the senior national team of Ghana, the Black Stars has been well-received by Ghanaians and with the Black stars lacking a proven goal scorer, this is understandable but is Inaki the solution to our struggles in front of goal ?
It is universal knowledge that after Asamoah Gyan exited from the Black Stars, the team has sorely lacked a potent and trusted goal scorer with many strikers being given the chance to impress but none have lived up to the bill so far.
Looking at the profile of Inaki Williams and the fact that he has being playing at the highest level of European football with Athletic Bilbao in the Spanish La Liga, it is easy for one to believe that he is the final solution to our troubles in front of goal but the facts say otherwise.
So here are the facts:
First of, the reason it has taken so long for Inaki to finally decide to play for the Black Stars is because he always hoped to get called up to the Spanish National team. And, in fact, there should have been no better time than now for Inaki to get his chance with Spain but that has clearly not been the case.
The main striker for Spain currently is Alvaro Morata. For those who follow football closely, they will know that Morata is one of the most unreliable and inconsistent strikers in world football. In fact, In the past season he was mainly utilized on the left wing whiles Juventus went in for a proven goal scorer in Dusan Vlahovic.
So with Spain sorely lacking in a dependable and consistent striker themselves, how is it that Inaki Williams has been so completely overlooked?
The answers lie in his numbers and numbers they say do not lie. Inaki has been the main striker at Athletic Bilbao for the past three seasons, at least and yet, he has failed to score more than 8 goals in each of those three seasons.
He scored just 8 goals last season and 6 goals each in the previous two seasons before the last.
And, this is despite holding the record for the playing in the longest-run of games in the Spanish La Liga. Inaki Williams has played in every single La Liga game for Bilbao since the 2016/2017 without missing a single game.
The fitness, technique and pace of Inaki Williams are beyond impressive but he has always lacked in goal scoring ability and this fact must not be hidden in all the excitement of him choosing to play for Ghana.
Yes, we finally have a striker who plays in a top European league but we can by no means say that our goal scoring problems have been solved. That will be setting ourselves up for a big surprise in the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.
And, what happened to Inaki Williams categorically stating several years ago in an interview with the Guardian that he will not play for Ghana because he does not feel Ghanaian enough?
I guess we have to ignore that in this marriage of convenience for both the Black Stars and Inaki with the latter getting a chance to play at the World Cup and Ghana getting a highly talented attacker.
